This is an original 1986 Soviet recruitment poster published by DOSAAF (Добровольное общество содействия армии, авиации и флоту) — the Voluntary Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Fleet — the USSR’s mass paramilitary-civic organisation responsible for pre-military training, civil defence, and the promotion of technical sports among Soviet youth.

While DOSAAF’s primary mission was to maintain pre-conscription military readiness across the population, it also operated vast networks of sports clubs, technical schools, and hobby groups throughout the Soviet Union. This poster’s call to action — printed in bold red text: «ЮНОШИ И ДЕВУШКИ! — “YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN! TAKE PART IN TECHNICAL AND MILITARY-APPLIED TYPES OF SPORT IN THE CLUBS, SECTIONS, SCHOOLS AND CLUBS OF DOSAAF!” — specifically targeted young people to join these activities, deliberately blending civilian leisure with state defence.

The historical context of 1986 is critical. The previous year had been declared the “Year of Inspiration and Youth” throughout the Soviet Union, culminating in the massive 12th World Festival of Youth and Students held in Moscow — an event that injected an unprecedented wave of international energy and modern optimism into Soviet youth culture. This poster, designed in the months immediately following that landmark festival, attempts to channel that cultural momentum back into state-approved structures.

It presents military-adjacent activities — helicopter operation, parachuting, go-karting, high-speed water skiing — not as grim duties but as dynamic, modern sports. The approach reflects a specific and conscious attempt to modernise the state’s message for an energised generation: DOSAAF not as obligation, but as adventure.

Visually, the poster is a high-energy time capsule. It blends traditional Soviet agitprop — the massive red header, bold white text, military insignia, and state stars — with a contemporary illustrated dynamism that sets it apart from the austere print culture of earlier decades. The complex lower grid contrasts clean graphic emblems with a series of action-oriented illustrations: stylised, futuristic vehicles rendered with a freshness that gives the entire composition a retro-futurist quality rare in official state print of the period.

Designed by Alexander Chantsev (Чанцев Александр Васильевич, 1949–2002) and published by DOSAAF’s Moscow publishing house, this poster belongs to a category of institutional print that was produced in large numbers for mass display — yet survives in collectible condition far less often than its Plakat counterparts.

An exceptional statement piece for interiors that embrace a Mid-Century Modern, Industrial, or Eclectic Urban Loft aesthetic — and a genuine conversation starter for a creative studio, home office, workshop, or bar with an appetite for authentic, culturally layered graphic history.

This is a dynamic example of an authentic Soviet imprint with beautiful ink density on genuine period paper. The main image area remains sharp and relatively clean, with colours retaining strong saturation and visual impact.

Wear: Some tears and moderate creasing and handling wear consistent with its age, particularly along the bottom edge. Small professional archival tape repairs are present on the reverse along the bottom edge. Light water marks and dust toning spots are visible, primarily in the non-printed white border areas and on the reverse — these do not distract from or intrude upon the central composition.

Details: The ink density and graphic clarity of the central image remain excellent. All text is fully legible. The period paper retains its characteristic weight and texture. Wear is confined to the margins and reverse, leaving the artwork itself largely unblemished.

We recommend mounting or custom framing to present this historic piece at its best — a mat will conceal edge wear and allow the composition to read as intended.
