Original 1979 Soviet Airlines Poster "Aeroflot — Wings of the Motherland!" – I. Guryev – Plakat, Moscow
A rare and visually arresting original from the golden age of Soviet civil aviation, this 1979 poster was published in Moscow by Plakat — the USSR’s foremost state poster publishing house — and designed by I. Guryev (И. Гурьев). It was produced for Aeroflot, the Soviet state-owned national carrier and, at the time, the largest airline in the world by fleet size and route network.
The slogan reads: «АЭРОФЛОТ—КРЫЛЬЯ РОДИНЫ!» — Aeroflot — Wings of the Motherland! Guryev employs a striking photocomposition technique: a smiling, elegantly uniformed stewardess holds a single red rose against a saturated sky-blue ground, her polka-dot collar, dark beret, and white gloves evoking the refined aesthetic of late-1970s Soviet service culture. In the upper left corner, a sleek Tupolev airliner cuts through the air, leaving a fine vapour trail across the horizon. The composition elevates the flight attendant to a symbol of Soviet hospitality, modernity, and national pride — Aeroflot as both a practical instrument of territorial unity and a projection of technological sophistication.
Printed in Dnepropetrovsk (Ukrainian SSR) with a print run of 85,000 copies, this is a highly collectible artefact of the late Brezhnev era, bridging state publicity and mid-century graphic design at their most confident.
